Polarity Therapy: Fire
Polarity Therapy Part III - Fire Element: Are You Holding Onto Anger?
by Christine Collings, MA, MI, RMT & CPE
Have you ever gotten so upset that you felt like, or have, punched someone? Or, do you hold in your anger and silently punish someone?

These are extremes in the range of anger. In Part 1, I mentioned that pain and disease occur when an element is out of balance for a long period of time.

When the Fire element is out of balance, unexpected flare-ups of anger are displayed. Maybe you know someone who is so hot headed that you have to walk on eggshells around him or her. The person may start to yell, throw a tantrum, or even get physically abusive with little provocation.

This person has built-up hurt. This highly likely that the person didn’t have the chance to release his/her anger in the appropriate way, time and place.

Another type of person may rarely show any anger. This person probably decided that showing anger is “bad” based on experiences involving people described above.

When situations in life needed some display of anger as a natural response, this type of person withheld it. Blocking emotions repeatedly depressed him or her. Anger turned inward is depression.

Over-expressed or under-expressed anger can result in stomach pains and headaches. A jammed knuckle in the middle finger is also a sign that the Fire circuit is out of balance.

The Treatments

Emotional childhood injuries are sometimes trapped in the body. There are at least two types of Polarity Fire treatments that help release the anger in a safe and controlled atmosphere. One type can last about an hour and is similar to massage; while the other type can be one done to rock and roll music. The solar plexus, as well as other “Fire” areas of the body are worked in “Rajasic” or fast and stimulating ways.

Fire is the fastest element, so this treatment goes quickly and there is not time to think-just release, release, release.

One client let go of some long-standing hatred in her heart that she wasn’t even aware she had. Because we aren’t suppose to hate, her mind refused to acknowledge having this emotion. The quick, intense Fire treatment released it, and her relationships with men improved.

Sometimes yelling, cursing and crying can be involved as deep hurts are released and transformed. You often end the treatment feeling extremely energized.

The day after a treatment, another client stated, “That’s why you spiritual people have so much energy. You don’t hold onto your anger.” He went home after the treatment and had energy to complete many house and yard projects.

Dealing with Sparks

One way that you can prevent Fire/anger problems is to know your limits. “Fire” can jump in and out of boundaries quickly. Trust your gut feeling – your intuition in the solar plexus. If you start to feel vulnerable or upset, use the element of Earth to set some boundaries.

Be practical. Can you express your anger in appropriate ways in the current situation? Sometimes telling others, “This is upsetting,” and explaining why while you are still relatively calm is appropriate.

Other times, you may not understand what is being triggered. Excuse yourself until you can make sense of the situation. Know that the person, situation or memory that triggered your anger is a tool for your growth. Find a time and place to understand your feelings as soon as possible. Talking to a trusted friend or counselor and/or having a Fire treatment could be helpful.

The sooner you release the feelings, the easier it is to live with yourself and others. Your goal is to become more childlike (not childish) and live in the moment.

You can also use the element of Water to cool off the situation. A meditation with water sounds, a cold shower or a cool bath with peppermint oil are excellent ways to balance the heat of anger (or a hot San Antonio day). Since peppermint oil is both stimulating and cooling, it matches fire’s need for quick movement and complements Fire’s heat.
