Aahh, choo! Cedar season is rolling around again, and we're gearing up
for the onslaught of antihistamines and kleenex, watery eyes, runny noses, and in-general grumpy dispositions. However, permanent RELIEF for allergy sufferers may come from a place they'd never think to look--their own minds!
Anne King, owner of Anne King's Hypnosis Center, on the outskirts of
Boerne, says she is so happy with the effectiveness of the "One-session
Allergy elimination" technique she began using a few years back, that
she's offering a "money back" guarantee... practically unheard of in the hypnosis world. King says she based her program on an NLP
(neurolinguistic programming) technique she learned at the National Guild of
Hypnotists convention in 1998.
The theory behind the hypnosis/NLP technique, according to King, is
that allergies occur due to a mistake in the immune system. Dust, pollens, dander and other allergens are not dangerous; however, the body
reacts to them as if they were. "Once a substance is flagged as a danger,
it will always cause an allergic reaction until the immune system is
re-educated," she says.
The miscommunication occurs like this: Macrophages, octopus-like white
blood cells in the immune system, search out and ingest foreign
elements in the body. If the macrophages recognize an element as dangerous, they send up a warning flag.
The warning flag causes Helper T-cells to rush in. The Helper-T's have
a marker, like a key hole, on their sides, and, if it links to the
macrophages' flag element, the Killer T-cells are called in.
Killer T-cells charge in like an infantry armed with histamine. The
histamine is released to explode the "perceived dangerous" element. And, you have an allergic reaction.
Most allergies get created for two reasons, King continues. They might
be caused due to emotional experiences over a period of time or from a
single, catastrophic event. They may or may not be emotionally laden,
she adds, but there is often an environmental overload.
Take the example she used of Mrs. X as a case in point. Mrs. X developed an allergy to house dust after the birth of her first child. When she came in for an allergy session with King, she spontaneously regressed to a time when she, as a child, (thinking she was being helpful) was sweeping up the garage while her dad "puttered." As the garage literally flooded with dust, he yelled at her to "Stop cleaning!" The birth of her own child triggered the response.
In the Allergy Elimination hypnosis session, King says clients are asked to choose a harmless substitute substance for the allergen. Then they visualize a "clone" of themselves outside a protective barrier, interacting with the harmless counter element, yet having no adverse reactions.
Gradually the allergen is substituted for the counter and the "clone" self is merged with the self having the hypnosis session. The entire
process takes about an hour.
King was recognized by the International Medical and Dental
Hypnotherapy Association as their "Educator of the Year" in 2001. She has been teaching her allergy technique to area hypnotists for about three years now. According to her own research and that of other practitioners, the technique is at least 80 percent effective. The only drawback, she feels, is that the technique only works on one allergy at a time. However, the process gets faster and faster, and multiple allergens can be eliminated one after the other as the client gets more adept with the process, she says. Clients are advised to have an allergy panel completed before they start the program.
She says she has personally worked with clients using the technique for everything from pollen to pet dander to metals and food allergies. Most with wonderful results.
There really only appear to be two reasons why an allergy
elimination might not work, she adds. First, the person has a vested interest
in maintaining the allergy. Maybe it helps them get out of work or buy
more attention from friends or family members. Or, they are overly
suggestable to the negative comments of others. With the latter in mind,
King always cautions her clients not to dwell on thoughts of failure or doubt and to avoid negative people as much as possible.
